Évora is the capital of the Alentejo, a walled city whose historic centre UNESCO listed as a World Heritage site in 1986, with a Roman temple at its heart and a Gothic cathedral beside it. Around it the plain runs to cork oaks, olive groves and vineyards (visitalentejo.pt). In 2027 Évora and the Alentejo will be European Capital of Culture (evora2027.com).
Getting there
By CP Intercidades train from Lisbon (cp.pt), or by car east across the Tagus.

Wine and lunch
A Cozinha do Paço, at the Paço do Morgado de Oliveira outside the city, holds One MICHELIN Star in the 2026 guide; Origens and Forno da Telha in Évora are in the selection. Cartuxa (cartuxa.pt) is one of the wine estates that welcome visitors.
Our advice: stay a night; the city is at its best in the evening light.
