The back story

About Comporta: rice fields, dunes and the Atlantic

Comporta lies south of Lisbon, in the municipality of Alcácer do Sal, with Carvalhal next door in Grândola (cm-grandola.pt): rice fields and storks, pinewoods, and empty Atlantic beaches. Its low, thatched houses and small hotels have made it a retreat for Lisbon.

Getting there

By car, south across the Tagus.

Beaches

The beaches of Comporta and Carvalhal run for miles along the Atlantic.

Comporta is reached by car, south across the Tagus.

Lunch and staying

Cavalariça in Comporta, the Sublime Comporta Beach Club at Carvalhal and Sem Porta at Sublime Comporta are in the 2026 MICHELIN Guide selection.

Our advice: book lunch on the beach well ahead in summer, and come in May or September for quieter sands.
