The back story

About Lisbon by rail and river

Lisbon’s railways fan out from three stations. From the Rossio, under its Manueline façade, CP’s trains climb to Sintra; from the Cais do Sodré they follow the river to Belém, Estoril and Cascais; and from Santa Apolónia and the Gare do Oriente, Alfa Pendular and Intercidades trains run north to Coimbra and Porto and south and east to the Algarve and Évora. Across the Tagus, Transtejo Soflusa’s ferries leave the Cais do Sodré and the Terreiro do Paço for Cacilhas, Seixal and Barreiro.

Sintra and the coast

CP’s Sintra line leaves the Rossio station; the Cascais line runs from the Cais do Sodré along the river through Belém and Estoril (cp.pt).

The long-distance trains

Alfa Pendular and Intercidades trains leave Santa Apolónia and the Gare do Oriente for Coimbra and Porto, and Intercidades trains run to Évora and the Algarve; book on cp.pt.

The ferries

Transtejo Soflusa runs ferries across the Tagus from the Cais do Sodré and the Terreiro do Paço (ttsl.pt): the short crossing to Cacilhas is the best cheap view of the city.

Our advice: check the timetable on cp.pt on the day, and validate your card before you board.
