The Baixa was rebuilt on a grid after the earthquake of 1755, running from the Rossio down to the Praça do Comércio on the river. Chiado climbs the hill to the west, the city’s old literary quarter, with its theatres, the Carmo ruins and the Praça Luís de Camões.
